A major Canadian marijuana grower that has a large-scale greenhouse operation in East Ladner has launched a program to give back to communities.

Canopy Growth this week announced the start of Tweed Collective, a nation-wide social initiative encouraging local charities, non-profits and city business improvement associations to apply for funding.

An initiative founded on the principles of progress, growth, and community development, the company says that over the next four years Tweed Collective will invest $20 million in social, responsible initiatives that will transform where and how people live in meaningful ways.

"Through the Tweed Collective, we are honouring the legacy of advocacy, progress, and community building that this important day in the cannabis community represents," said Mark Zekulin of Tweed in a news release.

"We started at home by supporting the local theatre and the community garden in Smiths Falls. With Tweed expanding across the country with new production sites and retail stores, home now stretches coast to coast and our contribution has to expand along with it. Cannabis legalization is an important social change and it is incumbent on us as leaders in the industry to renew our commitment to social, responsible community building all across Canada,”

The Tweed Collective is “also looking for artists, creators, builders, and partners with bold ideas for their community, to come share their vision.”

In advance of the legalization of recreational pot in this country, Canopy partnered with SunSelect Produce, which has a 1.7-million-square-foot greenhouse on Hornby Drive in East Delta, to create a new venture called B.C. Tweed. It’s one of the biggest cannabis greenhouses in the world.

The partnership also has 1.3 million square feet of SunSelect greenhouse space in Langley.
