There will be more soap box racing in Tsawwassen this year.

The soap boxes will be racing in Tsawwassen once again.

Delta council last week gave approval for the city to continue its partnership with the Rotary Club of Tsawasssen to host the fourth annual Soap Box Derby. The race will take place Saturday, June 22 on 6th Avenue.

The derby serves as an annual major fundraiser for the Rotary, helping fund community projects in South Delta.

A parks and recreation department report notes the event involves community sponsors purchasing carts and arranging for a driver. Each sponsor purchases a standardized cart mechanical package provided by Rotary.

The package provides the mechanical aspects of each cart, such as the wheels, braking and steering mechanisms. Each sponsor receives a written set of standards, outlining cart dimensions and the total weight limit of the cart driver.

In order to ensure participation, the Rotary has also focused on keeping entry fees and cart construction costs as low as possible.

A letter from Tsawwassen Rotarians Maggie Dorf and Rick Lewall notes it’s their intent to grow the event this year, hopefully expanding participation to 60 carts driven by local children.

They are also asking for the allocation of Delta bleachers.
