It was a standing-room only crowd that gathered to hear George Harvie’s big plans.

The mayoralty candidate delivered a rousing campaign speech to a large audience at the New Era Banquet Hall Tuesday evening, delivering much of the same message he delivered at his campaign unveiling in South Delta last week, but also outlining some promises for North Delta.

Among his commitments is to work with the school board to make sure the community has adequate tracks, taking a leading role, as well as having an equal number of council meetings for North Delta once the new arts centre there is open.

“Fundamentally, it is about respect for over 60 per cent of Delta’s population,” Harvie said, adding, “It’s about fairness, for all of Delta.”

Also on hand was his Achieving for Delta slate of Dan Copeland, Param Grewal, Alicia Guichon, Dylan Kruger and Cal Traversy. A campaign organizer told the Optimist at the event that the hundreds who attended came thanks to the efforts of Grewal who has generated a lot of buzz in the community.

In an opening speech introducing Harvie, Grewal said he was impressed with Harvie and the calibre of his team.

He quipped when he met Harvie, the former city CAO wasn’t what he expected, describing him as more like actor Clint Eastwood who spoke with measured tones and having an analytical mind.

Also in the audience showing support was Mayor Lois Jackson who was given high praise by Harvie for her accomplishments during her 19 years as mayor.
