Van Chau, a grade 10-12 science and biology teacher at North Delta’s Delview Secondary, has been awarded a Prime Minister’s Award for teaching excellence, certificate of achievement.

The awards honour outstanding and innovative elementary and secondary school teachers in all disciplines. Recipients are recognized for their leadership and exemplary teaching practices as well as for their commitment to help the next generation of Canadians gain the knowledge and skills they need for future success in a world inspired by ideas and driven by innovation.

Encouraging independence, punctuality, perseverance and grit, Chau uses games and hands-on activities to build critical and creative-thinking skills, and ensures students can do, know and understand the curriculum.

“Ms. Chau is an exceptional teacher who challenges her students in creative and intellectual ways,” said one former student. “She goes beyond teaching her students and wholeheartedly supports them in overcoming obstacles that they might face in the classroom.”

The Prime Minister’s Awards, offered at the Certificate of Excellence (national) and Certificate of Achievement (regional) levels, carry cash prizes of $5,000 and $1,000 respectively. Each recipient receives a letter and a certificate signed by the Prime Minister.
