Farming has never been this much fun

Day at the Farm takes place Sept. 7 at the Westham Island Herb Farm
Ladner Village Market
The final Ladner Village Market is this Sunday.

Gather your family and friends and join in the fun at the Westham Island Herb Farm for the 14th annual Day at the Farm.

Hosted by Delta Farmland & Wildlife Trust, in partnership with the Ellis family, Day at the Farm take place this Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

It gives visitors a unique opportunity to learn about Delta’s farming history and how Delta farmers play a key role in supporting wildlife conservation. It’s also filled with fun activities for the whole family.

Hop on one of the farmer-led hay wagon tours to learn what Delta farmers are growing.  Get your hands dirty digging your own potatoes at the BC Fresh Potato Dig. Spend time in the fields watching teams of horses plowing the way they did when farming began in Delta.  Visit with local 4-H club members and the Holstein calves they’re raising.

Day at the Farm will also feature interactive displays from the Delta Naturalists, Ducks Unlimited, Canadian Wildlife Service and more.

The “Kids Zone” encourages everyone to participate in games and sack races and little ones can get messy in the hay bale pit.

Chef Trevor Randle and a team of student chefs from B.C. Agriculture in the Classroom Foundation will be preparing delicious food to sample. Emma Lea Farms, Lundstrum Farms, Dairyland and Save-On-Foods have generously provided potatoes, blueberries and dairy products for student chefs this year.

Day at the Farm wouldn’t’ be complete without contests.

Vinca’s Kitchen has donated a prize for the best pie and BC Strawberry Council has donated a prize for the best jam. There were some incredible entries in 2018 and Randle had a hard time choosing the winners. Participants are asked to bring their jam and pie entries to the information tent (beside the stage) by 12:30 p.m.

The annual trivia contest could win you a Delta Farmland & Wildlife Trust package. You’ll also learn why cranberries float and who is T. Rex’s closest living relative.

There’s a new contest for home gardeners this year. Most of us find veggies in our patch that don’t quite look like the others, so if you have a three-legged carrot, a beet with an hourglass figure or a cucumber that is “totally bent,” bring it along and you could win you a prize.

Enjoy lunch from one of the food trucks, treat yourself to ice cream from Mario’s and prepare to be entertained.

Several young Delta performers will hold the stage in the morning and country/blues band Rollin & Tumblin will provide music in the afternoon.

There will also be a live “mini” auction with Delta South MLA Ian Paton.

Admission to Day at the Farm is free or by donation and Farm Credit Canada will be collecting non-perishable items for the food bank.

Westham Island Herb Farm is located at 4690 Kirkland Rd.
