Delta firefighters quickly had a small grass fire contained and extinguished Friday afternoon along Ladner Trunk Road.

Deputy fire Chief Brad Wilson said firefighters responded shortly after 4 p.m. to the fire, which was in the ditch along Ladner Trunk Road.

Wilson said neighbours were spraying the grass with garden hoses and a Metro Vancouver employee, who was in the area, was using a portable extinguisher. The fire was approximately 80-feet by 10-feet in size.

“Firefighters hit the fire with tank water and foam. Delta police was called to assist and provide traffic control,” said Wilson, adding the cause of the fire has not been determined.

The fire danger rating in Delta is at moderate, but Wilson expects given the hot, dry weather that is in the forecast for the next week, that the rating will be raised to high.

He said it’s a good time for people to heed the message of taking care in Delta’s parks and trails, as well as when travelling throughout the community and not throwing cigarette butts out windows.

“It’s just practicing common sense really,” he said.
