KidSport Delta is once again benefitting from the generosity of the community through a memorial hockey game and pub fundraiser.
In February, friends and former teammates squared off at the Kirk Holifield memorial hockey game at Planet Ice in Delta. There was also a fundraising after-party at The Landing Pub.
Holifield died tragically in 2007.
This is the fourth year the hockey game and pub night have benefited KidSport Delta. This year more than $4,800 was raised, bringing the four-year total to well in excess of $10,000.
“The more we can give out, the more we can keep our kids active and fit in our community,” said KidSport Delta chair Carlene Lewall. “Last year we gave out $65,000. Donations like this are huge. This means six kids we can give money to.”
Michelle Holifield, Kirk’s mom, said events like the memorial game and pub fundraiser would never happen in larger communities.
“This wouldn’t happen in Vancouver, this could only happen here. It’s just what this community is all about,” she said. “The pub was packed that night. At one point it was standing room only. It’s just nice to live in Ladner and know that so many people remember Kirk and want to support.”
KidSport Delta was formed in 2010 after a boost in sport from the 2010 Vancouver Olympic Winter Games and began giving out grants for sport registration fees in 2012.
Money is raised locally thanks to generous partners, sponsors and donors.
The Delta chapter’s next major fundraising event is its fourth annual Gift of Sport gala on Saturday, April 27 at 6 p.m. at Tsawwassen Springs. Tickets are $125 each, available by calling 604-889-1060.
New this year is an after-party dance with music from The Iconics. Admission for this is a $20 donation at the door. The dance starts at 10 p.m.
