The city is getting rid of the new gazebo in Ladner Village.

Council this week agreed to remove the structure and put it up for auction. Funds from the sale will be directed to the Ladner Business Association's tree lighting program.

Calling the structure the Town Square Gazebo, the LBA requested it be moved from the corner of Delta Street and 48th Avenue, citing concerns raised by members. The concerns include, among other things, its placement being too close to the curb, obstructing a stop sign, vandalism, maintenance as well as homeless people sleeping in it.

The gazebo was an unexpected gift to the city from the film production last fall Finding Santa.

“We recognize that this gazebo has drawn support from the public and we propose that the gazebo not be completely removed from Ladner Village but instead that an alternative placement be considered. We would like to suggest a location where with the addition of benches it could establish a destination for the community and even tourists to gather and enjoy. Possible locations for this specifically could include Spot on the Water Park or the municipal wharf,” LBA president Jill McKnight said in a letter to council.

McKnight noted another location could be in front of the revitalized former Municipal Hall on Delta Street.

At a recent council workshop with LBA members, however, it was agreed moving it was not feasible and there are safety and liability issues. It would also occupy space at the Ladner Village Market.

The city wants at least $500 and the purchaser would have to remove the structure by June 2. If there's no interest, the city will dismantle it.

The city will post a notice on its website as well as the Delta Optimist.
