The rapid expansion of FreshCo grocery stores in Western Canada includes a converted Ladner Safeway store in a couple of months.

The new FreshCo to open in Ladner is looking for employees.

The company is advertisng a job fair on Saturday, Oct. 26 from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at Delta Secondary, and on Sunday, Oct. 27, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Fisherman’s Hall.

Earlier this year Sobeys Inc. announced the locations of its first 10 FreshCo locations in B.C., including the conversion of the Safeway store in Trenant Park Square.

The store closed in mid-July and it’s currently undergoing remodeling. According to online job postings, the store is to reopen this December under the new brand.

“We’re excited to introduce FreshCo to Western Canada. We know customers will be thrilled with our high-quality, fresh products at market-leading low prices. FreshCo is committed to helping the community make every dollar count. Ladner shoppers will no longer have to sacrifice great quality for fair pricing, and we couldn’t be more excited to share the FreshCo experience with them,” the company said in a statement this summer.

Sobeys, which is owned by Empire Company Ltd., owns or franchises several grocery chains, including Thrifty Foods, IGA, Price Chopper, FreshCo and Foodland.

An earlier news release from the company stated it plans to convert 25 per cent of its 255 underperforming stores into FreshCo locations over the next four to five years.

Five years ago, Sobeys sold the Tsawwassen Safeway to the Overwaitea Food Group. The Safeway at 64th Avenue at Scott Road in North Delta remains and Empire isn’t saying if it will also eventually convert.
