Organizers cancel BC Superweek for 2020

Organizers of BC Superweek, a series of nine cycling races in six Lower Mainland cities, announced Monday they have cancelled this summer’s event due to public health concerns linked to the coronavirus pandemic.

BC Superweek was to be held July 10 to 19 with the annual Tour de Delta kicking it off from July 10 to 12. The City of Delta announced last Thursday it had cancelled the Tour de Delta this year.

Other races in the series include the New West Grand Prix, Gastown Grand Prix, Giro di Burnaby, PoCo Grand Prix and Tour de White Rock.

BC Superweek organizers say they plan to stage the series next year from July 9 to 18.

"With the likelihood that measures related to COVID-19 will continue for the foreseeable future, we must act responsibly to protect the many people who come together for BC Superweek from being at risk," said series director Mark Ernsting.

Since the emergence of the coronavirus outbreak, BC Superweek organizers have followed guidance from all levels of government and public health authorities about the year-round operation and planning of each event.

These considerations are especially related to concerns regarding mass gatherings and the strain on emergency services, as well as movement and travel restrictions within Canada and around the world.
