Tsawwassen residents are petitioning for a better crosswalk at Fred Gingell Park.

The city installed an overhead illuminated crosswalk on English Bluff Road in 2014, but some nearby residents are saying that pedestrians are not easily seen at the crosswalk due to cars parked alongside the road.

One recent letter writer to council noted that while a study that looked at traffic volumes determined there’s no need for a special crosswalk, there have been “near misses” due to the limited visibility. The resident noted the park is a popular spot that is in proximity to schools and “that it just takes one vehicle to not stop or see a pedestrian for a tragedy to occur.”

The residents are asking the city for pedestrian-activated flashing beacons.

City staff has referred the request to a business planning workshop.
