The City of Delta has once again received a less than flattering ranking when it comes to municipal spending.

Last week the Canadian Federation of Independent Business released British Columbia Municipal Spending Watch: trends in operating spending 2006-2016. Highlighting the 20 biggest cities in the province, the report gave the worst marks to Langley Township followed by New Westminster, Abbotsford and Delta.

According to the report, Delta’s operational spending went up by 30.5 per cent between 2006 and 2016.

The CFIB report comes just weeks after a report from the Fraser Institute that found Delta is a relatively high taxed, high spending city. That study compared 17 of Metro Vancouver’s 21 municipalities on several financial measures from 2007 to 2016.

According to the report, Delta was the fourth highest spender in the region on a per capita basis, behind only West Vancouver, New Westminster and Vancouver, and also collects the fourth most revenue in the region per capita.

Both reports come out as residents get set to head to the polls across the province.

“With municipal elections slated for October, our study helps residents in the Greater Vancouver area better understand the state of their municipality’s finances and how they compare to other cities so residents can start to have those discussions with their governments,” said Josef Filipowicz, a senior policy analyst with the Fraser Institute.
