With many struggling to gain access to social services, especially food banks, in the community due to the restrictions in place because of COVID-19, the City of Delta has provided a community update.

According to City of Delta Social Planner Gillian McLeod here is an update on what is available:

South Delta Food Bank- remains open every Wednesday.

“They are serving more folks and although they are not providing coffee and lunch, and are altering their distribution to follow provincial guidelines,” said McLeod. “They are dealing with expanded need at a time when some foods are not available. As always, and especially now, they are in need of financial donations to try to find the ‘missing’ food from non-standard sources. Without their usual discounts – their costs have gone up.”

North Delta Food Bank

“Was shut-down two weeks ago as the Surrey Food Bank (who provides this one) was asked to pull back their operations to only provide food at their Surrey location,” said McLeod. “Folks needing food could go to the Surrey location, however, many could not make that happen. Social planning has completed work with the amazing Deltassist to provide a temporary solution to offer food and supplies for our North Delta residents.”

Residents in North Delta are asked to share that registered food bank users, and any others needing food/supplies at this time, can call Deltassist at 604-594-3455, or email: [email protected].

“We have established an alternate system with phone screening and appointment setup to pick up gift cards from a variety of North Delta grocery stores,” added McLeod. “We are working on an intake system for volunteers and those with time and talents to share. We will update the social services pages on the Delta website – when this is up and running.

In the meantime, if you have unique gifts, ideas, donations to share – please contact Deltassist.

McLeod said social planning is also working with BC Housing to hopefully provide a temporary emergency shelter in Delta until at least the end of June. More details on that will be coming soon.
