South Delta Crime Beat: 100th birthday party generates noise complaint from neighbour

The following are some of the calls the Delta police responded to in the previous week:

 

Tsawwassen

Aug. 18, 1:10 a.m., 300-block of 66A Street: Complainant advised police there were three males on bikes throwing random items at her residence fence from the U.S. side of the border. Police attended and were unable to locate the males. Police confirmed there wasn’t any property damage. Verbal insults were exchanged from across the border. Police advised Whatcom County Sheriff’s Department which said it would conduct area patrols.

Aug. 19, 9:32 a.m., 5100-block of Galway Drive: Police received a report that a vehicle had been broken into overnight while parked at a residence. Complainant confirmed no damage to vehicle and no items taken from inside. Complainant indicated the vehicle was only rummaged through and did not want to speak with police; only wished for area patrols to be conducted. Area patrols for additional vehicles were negative.

Aug. 20, 9:36 p.m., Ferry Causeway: BC Ferries staff reported a possible impaired driver waiting to board the ferry to Nanaimo. Complainant said the male was smoking marijuana. Police spoke with the driver who advised he was travelling home to Nanaimo with his two children. The driver admitted he stepped away from his vehicle and took two to three puffs of a marijuana joint as confirmed by witness. Police conducted an evaluation and it was determined the driver did not show any signs of impairment and was allowed to proceed onto the ferry.

Aug. 20, 10 p.m., 1300-block of Enderby Avenue: Complainant reported to police that she parked her vehicle on the street out front of her residence. Upon returning to her vehicle she found it unlocked with the glove box appearing to have been rifled through. Complainant advised her cell phone was missing along with the registration to her vehicle and a pair of Ray Ban sunglasses. Vehicle had no apparent damage and believed to have been unlocked.

Aug. 21, 9:53 p.m., 700-block of Gilchrist Drive: Complainant called police to report that two youths broke potted plants near an open window at South Park Elementary. Complainant stated she observed two boys approximately 14 to 16 years old riding their bikes in the parking lot of the school. They broke the potted plants through the window and left. Police entered the classroom and observed a window which had a very small opening was ajar and inside the classroom, a file box was toppled over and two potted plants were on the floor.

Aug. 24, 8:13 p.m., 500-block of 52nd Street: Complainant reported a noise complaint of a live band emanating from the neighbourhood. Police patrolled the area and found the residence. Police spoke to homeowners who advised they were celebrating their grandmother’s 100th birthday. Homeowners advised the party was ending and the noise would cease. Police passed on their congratulations to the centenarian and left the scene with no issues.

Ladner

Aug. 18, 4700-block of 48B Street: Complainant reported ongoing issues with the residents in the neighbourhood singing on the front porch. Police attended and spoke with the resident, who was playing guitar upon police arrival. The resident agreed to quiet down for the evening.

 

Aug. 18, 3:55 p.m., 4400-block of Savoy Street: Complainant called police to report he had parked his vehicle at his friend’s residence to catch the ferry and upon returning found his tools were stolen. Complainant stated the point of entry was the canopy on the back of the truck and he could not recall if it was locked before he left the truck. Estimated value of tools: $700.

Aug. 19, 11:03 a.m., 5000-block of 47th Avenue: City of Delta employee called police to report there was graffiti at Memorial Park. Police attended and observed several markings on five picnic benches, two garbage cans, a shipping container and on the concrete floor near the gazebo.

Aug. 20, 12:10 p.m.: Complainant attended police headquarters to report his car had been keyed. Police observed the scratch, which was a foot long on the driver's side front panel. Complainant was unable to confirm when the incident happened. Complainant stated he wanted to make a report for information purposes for ICBC. Damage: approximately $300.

Aug. 20, 12:31 p.m., 5400-block of Ladner Trunk Road: Manager at a local business reported that staff had confiscated a fake ID. Complainant reported she noticed raised edges on ID as well as the patron’s inability to answer questions regarding his graduation date, resulting in her taking the ID.

Aug. 21, 3:04 p.m., 4600-block of 60B Street: Complainant called police to report his doorbell/camera was ripped off the exterior wall of his residence. Complainant provided police file number as requested to have unit replaced by company without charge. Approximate value: $250.

Aug 22, 6:17 p.m., 5100-block of Central Avenue: Police were dispatched to a reported mischief in progress at Hawthorne Elementary. Complainant advised a group of youths were breaking items on school property. Police located three youths who advised they were part of a larger group and were breaking old/discarded school furniture for fun. Police advised youth of consequences of their actions and determined that cleaning up the school/park grounds would be a reasonable restitution, to which all parties agreed. Complainant was advised accordingly and police were made aware the youths called back the remainder of the group to help clean up garbage for more than an hour. No school property damaged.

Aug. 23, 12:55 p.m.: Complainant attended police headquarters to report he had been called by someone claiming to be with Apple Support having locked his phone while at home. Complainant already provided the caller with a $100 Google Play Gift Card prior to reporting the call. Investigative queries came back to a fraudulent number out of the U.S. appearing to target phone numbers across Canada using various callers, names, companies and automated messages.
