South Delta Crime Beat: Ladner business experiences cyberattack, bitcoin demand

The purpose of the Crime Beat is to educate and inform the public about some of the property crime trends occurring in South Delta and other files of interest. The following are some of the calls the Delta police responded to in the previous week:

Tsawwassen

Aug. 14, 8:36 a.m., 1100-block of 55th Street: Building manager reported that the apartment building had been broken into overnight. The locks had been pried off and damage was approximately $1,000. Multiple break and enters reported in the days prior.

Aug. 14, 12:47 p.m., 1000-block of Wilmington Drive: Police attended a residence after a report of a break and enter where a mountain bike was stolen. Police located the individual and the bike, valued at approximately $400, was returned to the owner.

Aug. 17, 5:37 p.m., 1700-block of 56th Street: Complainant reported the mailbox had been broken into overnight at the apartment building. Mailbox pried open and mail stolen. Unknown point of entry/exit. No damage to any interior or exterior doors. Another mailbox in a different apartment building in the same complex was also broken into.

Aug. 18, 12:46 p.m., Canoe Pass Way: Police attended to a complaint of a dog in a kennel in the back of a pick-up truck at the mall. Complainant indicated dog was shaking in the kennel. Owner returned to the vehicle, explaining dog had been in the kennel while the owner ate lunch in a restaurant. The dog appeared to be in good health, showing no sign of distress.

LADNER:

Aug. 13, 11:27 a.m., 7300-block of 72nd Street: A complainant advised his business had been victim to a cyberattack. He advised the server located in Delta had been attacked by ransomware, demanding bitcoins to have it unlocked. He advised that the servers were then wiped.

Aug. 16, 6200-block of River Road: Complainant reported the theft of his bike and helmet from the underground parking. Complainant advised the bike was locked up and the chain had been cut. The theft occurred overnight. Approximate value: $950. No other reports of stolen items from the underground.

Aug. 16, 11:33 p.m., Ladner Trunk Road: Police conducted a stop after a vehicle was observed swerving. The driver blew into the approved screening device twice, resulting in two warns. As a result, the driver was prohibited from driving for seven days, fined and the vehicle was impounded. 

Aug. 17, 5:14 p.m.: Report of a shoplifter attempting to steal $173 worth of merchandise.

Recovered items included four packages of Gillette razors.

Aug. 18, 10:11 p.m., Fenton Drive: Complainant called police about a noisy party with dancing and a live band. Police attended and spoke to homeowner, who indicated the party would be shutting down in 45 minutes. The owner was advised that if police returned she may be receiving a ticket. No further complaints received.

Aug. 19, 6400-block of Highway 17: Officers conducted laser enforcement where the area is 80 km/h zone. Officers observed a taxi speeding excessively. Laser confirmed speed of 143 km/h. The driver was charged with excessive speeding and the vehicle was impounded.
