Throwback: A world championship race in Ladner

Let’s go back in time to July 17, 1977. All right, this certainly won't be an Olympic event, ever, nor will it be featured on any all-sports TV channels looking for content, but it looks like it was a lot of fun.

Let’s go back in time to July 17, 1977. All right, this certainly won't be an Olympic event, ever, nor will it be featured on any all-sports TV channels looking for content, but it looks like it was a lot of fun.

The photo from the Delta Archives shows the first world championship wheelbarrow race held in Ladner at Memorial Park. It was part of a two-day sports festival held in the community.  It shows the winners Bernie Barton and Dick Nicholls running the mile-long course in five minutes, 55.2 seconds. They got a $500 cash prize. The victors told the Optimist they "planned to spend the fruits of their victory by treating their wives to dinner."

They also got an enormous "World Championship Wheelbarrow Race" trophy donated by the Delta Credit Union.
