Residents will soon be enjoying double doubles and munching on Timbits in East Ladner.

On Monday night, Delta council gave final approval to a bylaw and issued a development permit to allow for a small Tim Hortons on a vacant lot adjacent to the Otter Co-Op gas station on Ladner Trunk Road at 64th Street.

Southborough Investments has been trying to build the restaurant since 2014, however the proximity of the drive-thru to nearby homes and the hours of operation were sticking points for council, which rejected the initial proposal.

A second proposal that included a higher fence and reduced hours of operation was received favourably by council.

Franchisee Frank Cooke said he’s happy to finally get to this point.

“I’m happy for Ladner because it is one of the few cities in all of Canada – such a great community – that doesn’t have a Timmy’s of any sort, so it’s great stuff,” Cooke said.

He said the next steps will be to get building permits to allow construction to start.

Cooke is also the franchisee for the new Tim Hortons drive-thru location set to open in June at Tsawwassen Commons.

“We are trying to get open a little earlier, but first week in June is where we are heading,” he said. “It’s been a long time coming, even for Tsawwassen Commons. It’s going to be great. It’s a new area with growth and with 3,000 more homes going in there, it’s nice to keep things locally. We can provide local employment and continue to give back to the community.”
