Re: Delta council concerned about traffic tie ups, Aug. 17

Your story concerning traffic issues in Delta focused on the July 23 closure of Highway 17 south of Ladner Trunk Road mentioned that "local police and engineering department personnel were on hand to provide assistance if needed..." Later, the same article states that "chief administrative officer George Harvie noted engineering staff couldn't get anywhere near the scene with messaging boards to notify motorists."

These statements seem somewhat contradictory and Harvie's comment should have generated a few questions from your reporter. Delta Engineering managed to be on hand to provide assistance, yet on the other hand, couldn't get near the scene to put up message boards? Curious.

And, why would they put message boards at the scene when they were needed at locations where motorists could still divert away from the scene? It seems a rather unbelievable excuse and with a limited number of roads linking the communities of Delta, it just isn't an acceptable explanation.

If this situation got them flustered, what will happen when a major incident occurs?
