It’s that time again. The Corporation of Delta has opened registration for their sustainable garden classes. Over the gardening season you will see lots of topics covered. I begin next week with a class called Homegrown 101. Yes, It’s all about vegetable growing and how to get started. For so many new gardeners it’s a base from which to get started. I will cover topics such as crop rotation and when to plant your spring vegetables.
I am not the only instructor. Ian Lai is back with a class about mason bees on March 26. Ian Lai is well known for his work at the Terra Nova gardens in Richmond. He runs a school program at the garden for hundreds of students. Do you are garden in small spaces? Perhaps his class on Small Space Gardens is for you.
Peter Isaacson is teaching about the dreaded European chafer beetle. Peter is an integrated pest management expert with the Canadian Nursery Landscape Association. Peter will discuss lawn care options and how to prevent chafer beetle problems.
Dr. Linda Gilkeson will be here in August for a class on preserving the tastes of summer. It’s wonderful to grow lots of vegetables but what do you do if you have too much? How do you store your harvest? These are questions you will have covered. I love Linda’s talks. She gardens over on Salt Spring Island and is a wealth of information. Back when I did my master gardener training at VanDusen Botanical Garden, Linda was one of the instructors. She is a well-known author and speaker. You can check out her website here.
Deborah Jones will be giving a class on how to build a rain garden. Deborah is from the Cougar Canyon Streamkeepers. If you haven’t seen a rain garden, drive up to see one next to Cougar Creek Elementary in North Delta. Deborah will show us how the rain gardens work and why they are so important to the environment.
