After all, where would we be without being able to bestow consolation prizes upon one's own failed election candidates by appointing them to Canada's graveyard of government patronage.

Pity the U.S. Senate where you actually have to win an election to get in, when in Canada all you have to do is lose one.

And here is an afterthought: The United States with a population of 313,914,000 (2012) has 100 elected senators. Canada with a population of 34,483,000 (2011) has 105 appointed senators.
