Last Thursday afternoon, the Grade 8 girls' teams from two arch rivals, South Delta Secondary and Delta Secondary, played a classic basketball game. The game went into overtime and was won by a single point.

While it's easy to caught up in the emotions of a win or a loss, both teams were exceptionally gracious and, in my opinion, genuinely respectful of each other.

As the coach of the losing team, I didn't hear anyone complain about the referees, any players on the other team and they didn't make any excuses.

Rather, with very high energy, they talked about great plays both teams made and how exciting it was to be part of such a special game.

I want to congratulate each of these young women from both teams. They clearly understand what it means to compete, but they also get this is a game, one that is supposed to be fun! On Super Bowl weekend, I was very happily reminded what I love about amateur sports. Thank you, ladies, for being such an inspiration. You've represented yourselves amazingly well and have made your coaches and parents exceptionally proud.
