Conscious decision made not to include Roberts Bank

Editor: Re: Feds didn't refuse to Roberts Bank to Ramsar, letter to the editor, Oct. 26 It is absolutely evident the work done by our MP, the Corporation of Delta, Metro Vancouver and many other organizations over the years resulted in the successful and outstanding Ramsar designation of the Fraser River wetlands. I wholeheartedly congratulate everyone involved for their role in achieving this extraordinary level of recognition for these sensitive and important habitats.

But it is also a fact that certain agencies and governments refused to include the Roberts Bank Wildlife Management Area in the designation: even the list outlined by our MP clearly shows it was not included in the application.

My information is that the "landowner" must agree and in this instance there was no support for a Ramsar application, which included Roberts Bank, by Port Metro Vancouver or, obviously, the province, which surely ought to have incorporated its own wildlife management area.

It is my contention that both the federal and provincial governments failed to require their agencies (Port Metro Vancouver being one) to support the inclusion of Roberts Bank in the quest for Ramsar designation.

My failure to adequately express that position is regrettable and I want to assure all parties that I hold their successful achievement in the highest regard.
