Two opinions voiced by Delta council at its meeting in North Delta on Feb. 18 are notable. Video proceedings are now archived for viewing on Delta's website at http: //www.corp.delta. bc.ca/EN/main/mayor/councilvideos.html.

Firstly (Item B.01), during discussion of a presentation by Fraser Surrey Docks (FSD) on its plans for shipment of U.S. coal to Texada Island, Mayor Lois Jackson was adamant this is FSD's project, not Delta's, and that Delta should not be associated with any proposed public information meeting lest the public get the wrong idea that Delta supports the project.

Contrast this with Delta's public information meeting on the Southlands, at the South Delta Recreation Centre last October, when Century Group staff, consultants, and story boards were a very visible part of the proceedings. Presumably, this will not happen again.

Secondly (Item J.05), during discussion of a request from Langley Township for Delta's support in removing a parcel of land from the ALR for airport use, both Jackson and Coun. Robert Campbell were vocal about the need for preserving agricultural land for agriculture.

Jackson said, "... this is the slim edge of the wedge and if we approve this or others in the province we are not going to have any agricultural land left." Campbell said, "... broadly we support agricultural land staying agricultural."

I am hopeful these recent declarations will set the tone for council for future public information meetings and decisions about the future of the Southlands.
