Happy New Year! Welcome to 2022!
We here at the Optimist have a lot to be thankful for and 100 reasons to celebrate in 2022.
It was March 23rd, 1922 that the first edition of the Delta Optimist newspaper was published. In 2022, the Optimist will celebrate its 100th anniversary.
This is a significant milestone for many reasons.
In this day in age, there are not that many businesses that can boast they have been around for 100 years. In the newspaper business, even less can say that, so for the Optimist to mark this occasion, well, it’s a pretty big deal.
To kick off our year of celebration, we have partnered with the Delta Heritage Society and the Delta Archives to present 100 years of images and stories. This special feature will be anchored to our editorial page (page 8) in print every week for the whole year. You can see the first installment in today’s edition.
Throughout the rest of the year, we will be presenting other stories, images and memories in print and on our website to mark our anniversary. This look back at the history of the Optimist will culminate in a special commemorative section that will be published in September.
We have some other plans in the works to help honour our past and those details will be released in the coming weeks and months.
And we will be looking to you, our dedicated readers and advertisers for your memories, stories and photos for our commemorative edition, so keep an eye out for announcements as well.
Lastly, I want to thank the community, past, present and future for the amazing support that has been shown to the staff here at the Optimist for the past 100 years.
Without that support, we could never have achieved this milestone.
