This Saturday, Aug. 27, a friend and I attended the open house at the OWL bird sanctuary in Delta. It was a special event as they were releasing a juvenile bald eagle and showcasing all the other facilities at the site. It was a wonderful moment as the eagle took flight and I thought about all the dedication that goes into rehabilitating these magnificent birds. The volunteers and staff who work tirelessly towards this goal, maintain the site and all resident birds, and go into the community to educate and inform the public about our feathered friends. We had some wonderful conversations with young volunteers who were enthusiastic and knowledgeable about their subjects. I understand that the municipality of Delta is very helpful in supporting this venture but the provincial government at this time does not. The OWL facility receives injured birds from all over the province, indeed the country, and does all this on a very limited budget. I urge all residents of Delta to take a moment to go and see the work that goes on there and perhaps to think of OWL when looking to make a donation to a very good cause.
