Letters: Businesses deserve more time to move

Let’s promote keeping our existing businesses, as well as inviting more.

Chisholm Street properties purchased by the City of Delta.

The following letter was sent to Delta Mayor and Council and copied to the Optimist.

I am writing to you regarding the plans for the city-purchased sites, where Heritage Interiors, Blue Moon Collectables and Dragonfly Antique & Salvage now stand.

I am all for revitalization of the waterfront in Ladner, if done with taste and the village heritage in mind. The idea of a possible hotel, where once a hotel stood many years ago, might be a good idea, if it isn’t too big. A nice heritage style boutique hotel could help to bring tourists to Ladner.

However, asking the current business owners to vacate their buildings in six months is ridiculous. Why not leave these businesses until they absolutely need to move?

By kicking them out now before they have the chance to find another suitable retail location within Ladner, you are killing off several more businesses in Ladner and adding more empty retail spaces creating a less vibrant village, the opposite of what we are all hoping for and what you claim you are trying to avoid.

I hope that you will give these businesses a longer time to move within Ladner.

Let’s promote keeping our existing businesses, as well as inviting more.
