Letters: Good luck to Beach Grove PAC

Among the list of 13 projects and programs to work on in 2022, Delta’s Parks, Recreation and Culture Commission is looking to complete two off-leash dog enclosures, while designing and consulting for additional sites.

Editor:

After listening to Delta Coun. Dylan Kruger on CKNW Monday (April 18), I looked up the recent piece on your website written by Sandor Gyarmati concerning the controversy over the Beach Grove dog park.

It seems city council and their planning department continue to believe that all it takes to establish a dog park is to erect a couple of signs and the odd poop bag dispenser. This occurred in 2012 to the property directly behind my home in North Delta (the Huff Greenway) when the entire huge green space was declared to be an off-leash area. Overnight I discovered that my back gate now opened up into a dog park.

I no longer walk the space because of the abundance of loose dogs. I will not take my young grandchildren out there when they visit. Delta obviously did not want to spend the money to construct a proper fenced area within the space so that those not wishing to mix with loose dogs could enjoy the area as well. Apparently council decided that it was the responsibility of my neighbours and I to provide a secure space for other people’s dogs. Despite attempts to dog-proof my backyard, at least two dozen canines have been clever enough to find their way in and pay a visit.

Good luck to the Beach Grove PAC in their efforts to have council fix the situation, but don’t hold your breath. They ignored the protests of myself and several of my neighbours back then.
