Letters: New provincial law is unfair to condo owners

It would leave the door open to investors to purchase units with the sole purpose of renting them out

Editor:

I write with respect to David Eby’s new law which allows the provincial government to intrude into the condo owners’ ability to live as we like in our own private dwellings.

The new law prohibits strata councils from imposing rental and age restrictions in condo buildings. It would leave the door open to investors to purchase units with the sole purpose of renting them out. In effect turning condo buildings into tenement buildings.

Renters do not have the same incentive to abide by the condo bylaws as the owners. Also, while I have nothing against children as such, as condo owners live in close proximity with each other without an age restriction I foresee noise reaching an uncomfortable level.

This is a flagrant invasion of Big Brother into our private lives and every effort should be made to ensure this law is rescinded. Obviously there is a desperate need for more housing but the solution isn’t to infringe on the condo owners' living enjoyment.
