Depression understandable but hang in there

Dear Editor:

It is no wonder people are feeling depressed just now.  Back in March-April during our initial lockdown, we had the feeling that if we all cooperated, we’d knock the stuffing out of this virus.  The days were getting longer, the weather better, the Covid numbers improving, and we had the summer ahead of us, so it was much easier to follow protocols.

Now, the days are getting shorter, the weather bleary, the COVID numbers going the wrong way worldwide, and the months ahead are looking bleak.  The second wave is becoming a wave upon a wave.  I am feeling depressed just thinking about a Christmas without the kids and grandkids.

But we have no choice. There will be other Christmases.  If everyone can keep their depression in check and do the right thing until a vaccine is available, then we might finally kick this virus to the curb and view it through the rear-view mirror.  The 1918 virus epidemic took a full 22 months to dissipate, so if we can lick this one in a year, we’ll be doing great!  Let’s “be kind, be calm, and stay safe” for a few months longer.
