Real concerns surround casino

On Aug. 13 Delta council passed a unanimous motion requesting that the Attorney General, Hon. David Eby, Minister responsible for Gaming, provide assurances and an implementation plan for the recommendations of the Peter German Report, ‘Dirty Money.’ This report, calls for sweeping changes to the regulatory framework and operations of the Casino Industry in B.C. The report also highlights actions to deal with loan sharking and other criminal activities related to casinos. At the time of the vote on the casino, Delta council did not have a copy of the full report.

Given the extensive reform needed in the casino industry in the province, it is my view, that a ‘hold’ should be placed on the construction of any new casino’s including the one proposed in Delta. To ensure public safety in Delta this would be the prudent course of action for Minister Eby and the British Columbia Lottery Corporation (BCLC).

I voted against the casino and I remain opposed to a casino in Delta as it doesn’t fit with our brand of a ‘safe and healthy community’.  The numerous issues raised by Delta residents regarding the impacts of a casino – gambling addictions, prostitution and criminal activities - remain real concerns. Thank you all for hundreds of letters, emails and presentations. These concerns far outweigh positive statements on the proposed project.

BCLC is required to facilitate arbitration with the City of Richmond and consult with neighbouring First Nations, prior to approving a casino in Delta.

I am ever hopeful that the Attorney General and the BCLC will see the need to put a hold on the casino in light of the Peter German report and the outstanding concerns of the residents of Delta.
