Timing is everything with traffic signals

On my recent visit to Toronto, I observed some difference in the timing of the traffic signals, especially in the timing of the pedestrian crossing signal.

On inquiry I was informed the local governing bodies in charge of the traffic signals set the pedestrian crossing signal to come on approximately five seconds before the lights change for the main traffic. It appears that some motorists were trying to beat the pedestrian crossing signal, especially when taking the right turn, and few accidents were reported because of that.

I was unable to obtain any statistics on the implementation of this minor change, however a minor change that costs nothing to implement, even if it saves one accident, is worth implementing.
