Winskill gang grateful to Delta for new bench

I just wanted to give a big shout out to City of Delta’s deputy director of parks and recreation Todd Stewardson.

I am very fortunate to have made friends with a group of lovely fellow Winskill neighbours over the years. Many times we catch up with one another as I am heading to or from Winskill fitness classes.

One of the best parts of my day is when I see “the gang” -- Dina, Walter, Ian or Diana -- sitting on the bench or walking near the turf field. The bench is a perfect spot for gathering as it provides a rest spot for some of them as they make their loop around the field. The location is key.

About a month ago “the gang” mentioned the condition of the slanted seating area had deteriorated and I viewed it as unsafe, so I contacted Delta to report it and was told the bench would be removed.

I inquired as to the status of the bench as there was a donation plaque on the bench stating Rotary had funded it and was told the maintenance of the benches are covered for 10 years as of installation date. Sadly it was long past that date.

I reported back to our gang and told them not to give up hope.

I called Delta again and expressed my concerns. I was pleasantly surprised when I received a call from Stewardson stating that wires got crossed and the bench would be replaced the following week.

Stewardson and I agreed the use of the bench was of great importance for our community and it provides them with a rest stop while completing their daily laps around the turf field. Healthy and happy seniors now can enjoy the sun on their faces and a safe rest stop.

It makes my heart sing that our voice was heard and that our active seniors’ needs were met.
