Re: Mayor sorry for radio comment, Aug. 3

I listened to Mayor Lois Jackson on the radio with Bill Good last week as they discussed Metro Vancouver moving forward with requests for proposals for a facility to incinerate garbage.

Delta's mayor voiced strong support for possibly locating it in Delta, your neighbourhood. I have heard from many people in the community on this topic and they are outraged that we should have to shoulder a garbage incinerator for Metro. It is unacceptable.

Please Mayor Jackson and Delta council, ask the people of Delta first before you commit our community to take on Metro Vancouver's garbage problem.

I believe council should take the opportunity of the November municipal election to gauge public support on this issue on the ballot. While we're at it, the election is a great opportunity to ask the Delta public how it feels about several issues, including:

. Allowing buildings over four storeys;

. What should be done about the Southlands;

. Harbour redevelopment in Ladner;

. South Fraser Perimeter Road issues, including air quality.

There are so many major issues in Delta that are not being given the opportunity for general public input, and this is a fantastic opportunity to change that. I will be presenting a proposal to Delta council to put these major issues on the ballot in the near future. And, I will make that proposal available to the people of Delta.

Delta should grow and prosper the way the people of Delta want it to, not by our elected officials arbitrarily making choices.
