SDSS volleyball victory turns out to be the best medicine

Being an avid local sports fan, I followed the South Delta Secondary senior girls volleyball team this season through the Optimist and my son, who attends SDSS.

Due to illness, I had not felt up to attending any of the games throughout the season. When the provincial tournament approached, I commented to my wife that I wanted to go see the girls play.

The week of the tourney, I was feeling quite glum and down in the dumps. My wife convinced me to get off the couch and go out to Poco to take in the tourney.

Boy, am I glad I did. I was blown away by the quality of play and the incredible talent demonstrated by all teams. I was most impressed by the SDSS girls and their togetherness. From the start, I knew I was watching something special.

While the semi-finals and finals were both contests to remember, the grit and determination shown by our Sun Devil girls in the finals was something else.

From a girl playing basically on one leg with a sprained ankle to the team captain who, while down 4-1 in the final set, made the play/dig of the tourney (TSN turning point), these girls were not going to be denied.

With 90 per cent of the sold-out gym cheering for their opponents, their victory was one for the ages. I could go on and on about how incredible a night that was, just ask my spouse.

After returning home that night, my wife mentioned she hadn't seen me so upbeat in a long time. I believe I said to her, "That was just the medicine I needed."

An overwhelming thank you to you girls and your coaches. I am so proud of you all. You have no idea how happy you made this old bag of bones feel.

That was a moment not only you and your parents will never forget, but one I, too, will remember forever.
