On Dec. 30, my wife and I, together with many others, ventured down to the dike at the foot of 72nd Street to view and photograph the spectacle of numerous visiting snowy owls.
Despite posted signs requesting that people stay on the dike path and not enter the marshy foreshore disturbing the resting owls, we observed several individuals who had hiked/waded down to the foreshore, choosing to disregard the posted signs.
All but one individual at least kept a reasonable distance from the fatigued owls. The one obvious violator was within a very few feet of a resting owl and eventually caused the owl to take flight in order to relocate.
Unless excused for reasons unknown to the many observers, I hope this individual takes great pride in being special by ignoring both the condition of the fatigued resting owl and the signs requesting it be left alone. It was all for the sake of a trophy photograph.
I hope the owl in question has not been caused any irreparable harm. I attach a distant image of the incident in support of my comments.
