Times are changing but that doesn't mean we should dismiss libraries

Re: Paton questions amount spent on public libraries, Jan. 23

Coun. Ian Paton's statement about libraries "going the way of the video store" may become a reality if community members (read taxpayers) don't take advantage of all they have to offer.

Historically, libraries have been a fundamental piece of the social fabric of a community. While the medium to consume information changes, the investments in our library system should not be so quickly dismissed.

As a 32-year-old professional who commutes to Vancouver, I am probably the least likely target user in the sights of the library staff. However, my wife and I have been absolutely impressed with the sophistication and functionality of the Fraser Valley Regional Library's online database and reservation system.

I can browse for items in one of the many libraries within the FVRL, while placing a hold promptly delivers it to your local branch with a pick-up email to boot. These services are just another reminder of the efficient use of limited resources.

While some libraries within the system may be marginally used, I believe a more efficient hub and spoke distribution model could lessen their financial footprint while still providing first class service.
