Re: Premier gets an earful on traffic, Aug. 8

Both our premier and mayor and council have apparently recognized the chaotic traffic situation that would follow the introduction of more vehicles, both commercial and passenger, if development of the Tsawwassen First Nation lands and the Southlands property take place.

In spite of this, Delta council is still encouraging both proposals by not denying services to the TFN for the major shopping plaza, and by proceeding with the Southlands public hearings as if they were totally unaware of the impact such developments would have on local citizens.

The signs erected along the fence on the west side of 56th Street (surrounding the Southlands) and the pretty little home presently receiving finishing touches at Town Centre Mall - proclaiming not too subtly that it is a sample of many soon to be built at Southlands - suggest that far from being concerned for the quality of life in Tsawwassen, our council's protestations and expressions of concern may simply be a smokescreen to convince us its decision has really not been made.

Meanwhile, both the TFN and the developer of the Southlands know they may soon be permitted to "proceed as planned."
