The newest Metro Vancouver members of Alexa’s Team are recognized during a ceremony last week in New Westminster.

Four Delta police officers were among more than 200 from across the Lower Mainland to have their names added to Alexa's Team last week.

Alexa's Team recognizes officers in the province who make an extraordinary contribution to reducing the number of impaired drivers on the roads.

The team is named after Alexa Middelaer, the fouryear-old girl from Ladner who lost her life in 2008 after being struck by an impaired driver.

"As a family, it is our privilege to recognize the members of Alexa's Team whom have gone above and beyond to ensure the safety of our communities," Laurel Middelaer, Alexa's mother, said last week. "It is good and right to acknowledge and thank those who individually and collectively make an enormous difference each and every day."

In 2009, the Middelaer family partnered with the BCAA Traffic Safety

Foundation to establish Alexa's Team. To date, more than 1,880 officers across the province have had their names added to the team.

This year, Delta constables Nilo Diguangco, Joshua Lehbauer, Mathew Taylor and Andrew Thompson joined Alexa's Team. Collectively, the four officers took 101 impaired drivers off the road last year.

Since 2008, Alexa's Team members have processed more than 71,300 impaired driving sanctions.

"In the wake of the tragic loss of our daughter, Alexa, this is one event that allows our family to find some needed good," Middelaer said. "These members are heroes and deserve our appreciation; we look forward to celebrating with them at the four events in our province this spring."

Alexa's Team holds annual recognition events in Metro Vancouver, Victoria, Kelowna and Prince George to personally thank officers.
