Jordan Deyrmenjian has 15 points in his last five games that included a first star performance in a 6-1 road win over Aldergrove last week.

A suddenly red hot captain is certainly good news for the Delta Ice Hawks.

After a relative slow start to the season by his standards, Jordan Deyrmenjian has heated up in a big way over the past couple of weeks with 15 points in his last five games. The 20-year-old now sits fifth in league scoring and looks capable of his impressive pace of a year ago when he finished with 69 points in 38 games, including 31 goals.

Deyrmenjian’s two goals and one assist performance in Aldergrove last Wednesday earned him first star honours in a 6-1 Ice Hawks win. Alex Suprynowicz and rookie Brad Fortin each finished with a goal and assist. Daniel Rubin and Jordin Kojima also scored. Jordy Engleson was terrific in net, making 29 saves.

One night earlier, Delta produced a 5-2 win over the expansion White Rock Whalers. It took third period goals from Jonathan Rees and Rubin to finally put away the pesky Whalers who are enjoying a competitive season under former longtime South Delta Minor coach Jason Rogers.

Rubin added another goal while Mark Epshtein and Deyrmenjian also scored. Rees and Deyrmenjian each added three assists. Thomas Watts made 16 saves for the win.

The Hawks return to action Tuesday when Port Moody visits Ladner at 7:35 p.m. Delta also travels to White Rock on Saturday.

Icing…

With five blueliners currently on the injured list, there’s nothing like bringing in a top six d-man from last year’s championship team to help fill the void. Thomas Garey was in the line-up in both wins last week as an affiliated player and showed little signs of rust. The 18-year-old South Delta native opted not to play junior this season to focus on school. However, he could be available for more action as the season unfolds.

Hawks GM and head coach Steve Robinson expects regulars Jake Dowell, Riley Storey and Marcus Sihota to be back in the line-up for Tuesday’s game. Callum McDonald and Ryan Bayley’s return is also on the horizon.
