Remember to look after one another—from a distance: Delta South MLA and BC Liberals leader

Over the past month we have been confronted with a crisis that has changed our daily lives. We have been forced to alter our regular routines, physically distance from our friends and loved ones, and adapt to a world filled with significant challenges.

While it has been difficult for many to adjust, it is encouraging to see our community respond to concern and insecurity with generosity and kindness—which are needed now more than ever.

In Delta, we are lucky to have so many people who are going out of their way to support our community. In the last two weeks we have been working with Brent Kelly Farms and Guichon’s Felix Farms, two local Delta producers, to help our most vulnerable. Combined, they have donated over 600 pounds of fresh beets and potatoes to our local food bank. We know they are not alone and many more thoughtful residents have been doing their part to give back as well.

Every night, we all are taking to our front steps and balconies at 7 p.m. to salute our health care workers. This always includes an amazing show of support from emergency vehicles who drive by Delta Hospital with their lights and sirens blaring. We are so thankful for our workers on the front lines who, on a daily basis, are putting themselves at risk to keep us safe.

It is these acts of care that remind us that even though things seem uncertain at the moment, we really are all in this together. They are also reminders that there are still small things within our control, actions we can take, that can make a difference.

We want to take the opportunity to thank all of the essential workers who continue to go to work every day to provide us with the services that we need. To the hard workers who show up every day to serve us at the grocery store, the pharmacy, the gas station, the hardware store, and the liquor store – thank you. To the bus drivers who shuttle our workers across town, and the farmers who grow the food we need to feed our families, thank you. To the owners and employees of restaurants, bakeries, and craft breweries that are finding new and innovative ways to deliver fresh and delicious food and beverages to our doorsteps every night – thank you.

And once again, to everyone working to keep us safe – our paramedics, nurses, doctors, fire fighters and police officers – thank you so very much for your service to our community, our province and our country.

As your elected officials, please know that throughout these difficult times we are working harder than ever to look after everyone in our community. We are doing everything that we can to work with the government to ensure that all of you who have been impacted by the COVID-19 crisis are receiving the necessary supports you need.

As we continue in our fight against the spread of COVID-19, let us remember to look after one another, even if from a distance, and look forward to the day we can celebrate being beside each other once again.
