If you’re a bit squeamish about bats, a bit of knowledge may help ease your fears.

As part of the City of Delta’s commitment to be a designated bat-friendly community, it’s hosting a presentation and bat talk and walk on Thursday, May 30 at the Douglas J. Husband Discovery Centre, near city hall.

The event goes from 7:30 to 10 p.m. and begins with an hour-long presentation about bats, their habitats, and the best places to watch them at night. There also will be tips about how to minimize a bat encounter if they’re feeding or living nearby, along with ways of helping support local populations.

After the talk, at 9 p.m., there will be an hour-long walk through a park where people will be able to see and hear bats doing what bats do.

During the walk, echolocation will be discussed and how to safely watch the critters. Bats are important animals but are feared and misunderstood by many, the city says online. “Come out for a night of adventure…Come out for an extraordinary night of bat education and fun,” the city says in a news release.

People are asked to wear closed shoes, pants, and long sleeves for the walk.

Registration is done online at: delta.ca and there’s a maximum number of 25 participants and a minimum age of eight.
