Earthwise Society offering free kit to plant a ‘Victory Garden’

These days it seems more and more people are getting into gardening. As COVID-19 draws our attention to local food security, we are not only growing our own gardens, but many of us are also looking for a way to help others access healthy food.

This year, Earthwise Society has adapted its popular Don’t Mow, Grow program to include more gardens, and to provide an opportunity for gardeners of all experience levels to make a tangible difference in the lives of people who need it the most.

This unique program provides support to get gardeners started and then shares a portion of the harvest to those in need through Delta Food Coalition.

All you need to get involved is a space to garden and a desire to grow food organically. The space can be an existing garden, small or large, or you can start from scratch.

Earthwise Society will provide participants in Don’t Mow Grow Victory Gardens with a free starter kit containing a selection of seeds and organically grown seedlings.

Registered gardeners will have access to organic gardening advice from the Earthwise farmers, and of course they’ll benefit by enjoying their own homegrown produce all season long.

Don’t Mow Grow Victory Gardens participants will be able to donate a portion of their harvest to Earthwise Society for distribution through Delta Food Coalition to those in need in our community. This program has been initiated with the support of United Way of the Lower Mainland in response to COVID-19.

Earthwise hopes to distribute 400 boxes of fresh local produce through Delta Food Coalition this year.

Being part of the Don’t Mow Grow Victory Gardens program is great for individuals or for families. It’s an opportunity to plan and share an outdoor activity, to discover new things about nature and about growing food, and to give back to those in the community who need help.

What could be more gratifying than knowing that produce you have grown and harvested has played a direct role in transforming your community into a happier, more food secure place?
