Ollie Hodges shows off her 1950s point blanket, which she will bring to a special ElderCollege Delta presentation. She received her blanket as a wedding gift from her mother in 1959.

Point blankets will be the topic of discussion at an upcoming ElderCollege Delta presentation in Ladner.

During the first part of the session, Howard Tichenor, the author of The Blanket: An Illustrated History of the Hudson’s Bay Blanket and The Collector’s Guide to Point Blankets, will share the history of the point blanket followed by a question-and-answer session.

“Point blankets are a type of trade blanket and are most closely associated with the Hudson’s Bay Company who have been marketing them into North America since 1779,” Tichenor’s website explains.

In the second portion of the session, Tichenor will date and assess blankets brought in by the audience. A copy of the author’s collectors’ guide will go to the person who brings in the oldest blanket.

The event is set for Saturday, March 3 at 10 a.m. at Cedar Park Church, 5300-44th Ave.

Registration is required. Register online through www.kinvillage.org/community-centre/eldercollege or call the ElderCollege office at 604-943-0262.

The event, titled The Hudson’s Bay Blanket – Point Blankets from Fur Trade to Home, is free for ElderCollege Delta members. Others can attend the presentation by taking out a $10 annual membership.
