The Corporation of Delta is once again connecting residents with a career in the trades by hosting the 2017 Delta Trades and Technical Career Fair.
The free event is set for Thursday, April 27 from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. at Sungod Recreation Centre in North Delta.
Since Mayor Lois Jackson started the event in 2013, it has provided a platform for people to get inspired about careers in the trades. And while you'll see plenty of young people perusing the booths, thinking about becoming a carpenter or maybe a chef, the event is meant for anyone and everyone, whether you're at a crossroads pondering a new path or thinking about a career for the first time.
More than three dozen exhibitors will be set up in the arena and the surrounding parking lot, offering hands-on introductions to a variety of unique careers.
In addition to the many interactive exhibits, the Show Stage will feature a variety of presentations, including the tantalizing artistry of the White Spot chefs as well as frank, motivational talks on women in trades.
The fair continues to evolve and this year it boasts two new appendages: the Job Fair and the Boat Race.
The Job Fair will host different organizations with immediate job opportunities they are looking to fill now. From 4 to 8 p.m., job seekers are encouraged to come interview ready and armed with resumes.
The Boat Race will give students in grades 10 through 12 the chance to work alongside marine industry professionals to construct a vessel that can withstand the wild waters of Sungod's aquatic centre. Prizes are up for grabs, including the grand prize of $2,800 cash. More cash prizes are available for the second place finishers ($1,600) and for the team with the most fans ($800).
