They miss their students. So in a show of love and support, teachers from Hawthorne Elementary in Ladner came together for a car parade on Friday afternoon.

About 30 teachers and support staff decorated vehicles with balloons and messages for their students and families.

“We are getting out into our neighbourhood to greet our students and let them know how much we miss them,” said learning support teacher Kristi Schofield. “It was also important to us to demonstrate good physical distancing, so we encouraged families to stay on the sideways and their driveways.”

With horns honking and staff along with their own children, waving and shouting hellos, the parade wound its way through the entire Hawthorne catchment area.

“We have so much pride in our school, I think it's great that almost the entire staff got out and to show the kids they miss them and also give the kids a chance to show they miss the teachers,” added Schofield.

As the parade slowly moved past homes on Friday morning, in the sunshine, more and more families opened their doors, stepped onto their porches, and waved back at their teachers and principal, who said everyone was excited to see all the smiling faces. Several families displayed huge signs saying how much they missed the staff. Many other families rang bells, horns or blew bubbles!

One grade one teacher summed it up perfectly. “It filled my bucket with love to see my students again!”
