Signs of the times

MINISTER'S MINUTE

Hats off for the sign makers of South Delta. In particular, whoever "dresses" the great blue heron that sits at the entrance to Ladner on Ladner Trunk Road. I say, "Bravo!" You have made it clear this village community is full of surprises and a fair bit of fun thrown in for good measure. I think that's the mark of a good sign.

There are also some great signs that are found throughout the Christian community. Like the heron, they are simple in nature but always point to a deeper message. Recently, we have had a sign at the corner of All Saints Anglican Church that has announced "Taize" and "Cracking the Code."

Taize is a place in France that many years ago became a pilgrimage site for young people from around the world. Brother Roger and his community invited youth to gather and experience a life patterned after Christ's life. Music and prayer formed a big part of the community's life - and Taize music has become popular and used in worship around the world.

"Cracking the Code" was a series of teachings in trying to unwrap some of the church-words we use, but rarely explain... like grace, glory, sin, salvation and, for the Anglicans in the crowd, the famous word propitiation.

But here's the interesting thing: whether it is words or music or signposts, our focus is always on telling the truth of God's love for us all.

The sign we write on our hearts this Easter-tide is simple, "Alleluia, Jesus Christ is risen!"
