It’s been a hectic couple of days for South Delta’s first standalone fried chicken restaurant in years.

Mary Brown’s Chicken and Taters is the latest dining option at Tsawwassen Commons.

After securing his lease, it took nearly six months for franchise owner David Ge to get construction completed and a staff of about 15 hired.

He opened his doors on Wednesday.

“Since we opened, both days have been just crazy busy,” said Ge on Friday morning who has staff from the company’s head office assisting with grand opening week.

Tsawwassen and Ladner have not had a standalone fried chicken restaurant since the days both communities had KFC restaurants.

KFC is one of the current food court options in Tsawwassen Mills.

Canadians were first introduced to Mary Brown's in 1969 when two Newfoundlanders, Pat Tarrant and Cyril Fleming, opened their first restaurant in St. John's. During that first year, they tripled in size, opening two more restaurants under the original name.

They changed their name to Mary Brown's soon after, in honour of the woman behind their signature chicken recipe. Since then Mary Brown's has become a household name, renowned for big, juicy, tender chicken.

Today Mary Brown's has stores across Canada and throughout Metro Vancouver, including a North Delta location that opened in 2020.

Tsawwassen Commons’ Mary Brown’s is open noon-to-7 p.m. seven-days-a-week.
