Activities galore during Seniors Week

Centres have events taking place every day next week

There are a variety of events and activities planned for Seniors Week this year in South Delta.

The week, which celebrates the integral role seniors play in the community, runs from June 1 to 7. Both of the local seniors centres - McKee Seniors' Recreation Centre in Ladner and KinVillage Community Centre in Tsawwassen - have busy schedules for the week.

The week starts at McKee on Monday with a breakfast and then a walk through town with a banner to announce the start of Seniors Week. That will be followed by a nutrition talk. Participants will be entered to win prizes, notes Arla Tanner, past chair and current director of instructional programs and annual events.

After in-house/membersonly events on Tuesday and Wednesday, there will be carpet bowling and mah jong open houses, as well as a social dance club, on Thursday.

Carpet bowling is really good, says Tanner.

"We get a lot of people that come here that lawn bowl and they use this for their practice during the winter," she says.

Friday's Strawberry Tea honouring 90-plus members is the week's "big event" at McKee. There will be entertainment and a raffle for a custom Barbie doll.

"We have got 23 people who are over 90 years of age that participate every day here. Unreal," says Tanner.

Saturday includes B.C. Seniors Games cribbage playoffs, jackpot bingo and a jazz concert by the Bridge City Band.

Seniors Week begins at KinVillage on Monday with a pancake breakfast followed by exercise classes, a sale at Unique Boutique and a games night.

There will be a movie shown on Tuesday while a lunch special and "Big Bingo" are set for Wednesday.

A round-robin snooker

tournament, with prizes, will be held on Thursday and a big partners bridge tournament is scheduled for Friday.

Players coming from across Delta and Richmond will take part, notes director of recreation John Lusted.

KinVillage will also be selling tickets for a grand raffle (draw is on July 11) during Seniors Week.

"This is big for us," says Lusted, noting the centre is currently fundraising for a new bus.

Seniors Week activities will also be held at civic facilities around South Delta.

Planned events include coffee, tea and cookies at Winskill Aquatic Fitness Centre on Tuesday, a badminton tournament on Thursday and a pickle ball tournament on Friday at the South Delta Recreation Centre, a volleyball tournament on Tuesday at the Ladner Leisure Centre and a scrapbooking session Tuesday at the Tsawwassen Arts Centre.
