Band bids farewell to The Saint

92-year-old Ed St. Godard was member of pipe band for four decades

The Delta Police Band is bidding a final farewell to one of its own after long-time member Ed St. Godard died Monday.

The Second World War veteran was 92 and last performed with the band on Remembrance Day in 2014.

Described as an avid outdoorsman with a real zest for life, St. Godard worked as a driver of a Red Cross vehicle during the war and received the Military Medal from King George VI for his bravery in rescuing both allied and German casualties on the front lines.

He saw service in both Canada and England before serving in Italy with the Lanark and Renfrew Scottish Infantry Regiment.

St. Godard joined the Delta Police Pipe Band in 1976 as a tenor drummer. Known to his band mates as The Saint, St. Godard was honoured by the department and the municipality in May 2012 for his 36 years of service to the band.

He became a source of inspiration for the younger members and was a beloved member of the band. He only stopped performing when his health started to decline late last year.
