Barn gets boost from Ottawa

Feds provide Delta with $250,000 toward restoring heritage structure

Delta will be able to realize the full vision for the Harris Barn sooner after the project received a financial shot in the arm this week.

On Tuesday morning, Delta-Richmond East MP Kerry-Lynne Findlay announced $250,000 in federal funding for the project.

"Our government is committed to creating jobs, growth and long-term prosperity in our communities across Canada," Findlay said. "By making these investments in local infrastructure, we are helping boost economic activity and maintain a high quality of life for Canadians."

The barn, which was constructed in 1900, is recognized as one of Delta's historical agricultural assets. The municipality stepped in to save the structure after the owner applied to tear it down.

The barn is being refurbished and will be used as a community gathering space and stand as a tribute to the area's agricultural heritage. The main floor will be able to accommodate up to 275 people while the second floor, a U-shaped mezzanine, will have space for another 200. In all, the barn will have about 8,000square-feet of space.

The original budget of $600,000 was increased to $1.15 million to pay for the improvements.

Ken Kuntz, Delta director of parks, recreation and culture, said the federal funding will allow the municipality to complete all aspects of the vision for the barn faster.

The $250,000 will help pay for a fire suppression system, enhanced lighting, a mobility lift, kitchen service area and signage, as well as upgrades to the sewage and water system, parking and landscaping. Kuntz said all of these aspects were part of the overall vision for the refurbished barn but some would have been completed at a later date without the additional money.

Kuntz said the final costs for the project are being tallied and staff will be presenting a report to Delta council early next month.

"We are grateful for the government of Canada's support towards the preservation and transformation of this historic barn into a community amenity," said Mayor Lois Jackson.

The grand opening of the Harris Barn, which now resides next to Kirkland House on Ladner's Arthur Drive, is set for May 25.

Coun. Robert Campbell, who chairs the parks, recreation and culture commission, said the barn is already fully booked for every weekend this summer and summer 2014. As well, many events are already planned for the fall.
